Make the model answer in a shape your code can rely on — then let it act.

A model that answers in prose is a model you cannot build on: every downstream step has to guess. This course is about contracts. Ask for JSON and validate it rather than trusting it; write a schema and check every field; repair a malformed answer instead of crashing on it; and decide what to do when repair fails. Then tool calling — declaring your functions to the model, running the call → execute → return round trip, handling a truncated call, and dispatching safely when the model names a tool that does not exist.
Why prose breaks pipelines, and how a declared shape turns a guess into a check.
Declaring your functions to the model, running the round trip, and dispatching safely.
